Renting a Car in Utah With a License From Another State — or Another Country

If your driver's license is valid, Driver Valley works with you. That is the whole policy, and it is simpler than what most people expect after a big rental counter has turned them away. Whether your license was issued in Utah, another US state, or your home country, here is how renting works with each kind — and the one document that honestly will not work.

The short version

A US license from another state

This one is easy. A valid driver's license issued by any US state works at Driver Valley exactly like a Utah license. Visiting family in Salt Lake City, here on a work assignment, or road-tripping the national parks — book online, bring your license and your card, and pick up at our lot five minutes from SLC airport. There is no out-of-state surcharge and no extra paperwork because your license says Colorado, Texas, or California instead of Utah.

A valid license from your home country

Many newcomers assume the big chains speak for every rental company. They do not. If the driver's license from your home country is valid and current, Driver Valley rents to you. Bring the license itself — the physical card, not a photo of it — because that is the document we record on your booking.

If your license is not in English, pickup goes faster when you also bring your passport or an International Driving Permit. That is practical advice, not a wall: those documents help our team read your license details quickly and get you on the road without a long translation conversation at the lot. Questions before you book? Text us at (801) 450-9765 — we are text-first, and a photo of your license by text lets us confirm everything before you ever come to the lot.

The International Driving Permit: a companion, not a license

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a small booklet that translates your license into several languages, English included. Rental counters around the world recognize the format, which is exactly why it is useful here: if your license is in another language or alphabet, the permit lets anyone read it at a glance.

What an IDP is not is a license by itself. It has no standing without the real license behind it, and it cannot replace one. Bring both together — license plus permit — and you have the smoothest possible pickup.

Recently moved to Utah, still on your old license

New Utahns rent from us all the time during the settling-in months: the new job started, the family is here, and the Utah license appointment is still a few weeks out. If the license you already hold — from another state or another country — is still valid, it works here while you get established. Plenty of our weekly and monthly renters are in exactly this spot, which is one reason we rent by the week: the car covers you now, and you extend week to week until life is sorted. Our weekly rental guide explains how those terms work.

What will not work — said plainly

A learner's permit is not a license. It lets you practice beside a licensed driver; it does not qualify you to rent, here or anywhere else. The same goes for a license that has expired or been suspended: the license on your booking has to be full, valid, and current on the day you pick up and for the days you drive. We would rather tell you that straight than have you find it out at a counter with your luggage beside you.

What to bring on pickup day

Pickup is at Park N' Jet – Mountain Lot, 2200 W North Temple, Salt Lake City, about five minutes from the airport, with a free shuttle from the terminal. Every booking needs a card on file and a signature on the rental agreement — the same two things we ask of every renter, whatever their license says.

Rent a car in Utah with an out-of-state license

Visiting Utah, here for work, or just moved? You can rent a car with an out-of-state license at Driver Valley in Salt Lake City — a valid license from any US state works exactly like a Utah one. New residents drive on their previous state's license for a limited window after moving, and your rental works the same way: bring the physical license, book online, and pick up by the airport. No credit card is required either — debit, Cash App, Venmo, Chime and PayPal all work, with a flat $50 refundable deposit.

Questions, answered

Can I rent a car in Utah with a license from another country?

Yes, at Driver Valley. If the driver's license from your home country is valid and current, we work with you. Bring the license itself; if it is not in English, bringing your passport or an International Driving Permit along helps pickup go faster, because the permit works as an official translation of your license.

Is an International Driving Permit enough by itself?

No. An International Driving Permit is a translation companion — it is not a license on its own. Carry it together with your actual license from your home country and the two work as a pair.

Can I rent with a learner's permit?

No. A learner's permit is not a full license, and every Driver Valley driver needs a full, valid driver's license. Once you hold the full license, you are welcome to rent.

Do I need a credit card to rent from Driver Valley?

No. Debit cards work, and we also accept Cash App, Venmo, and Chime. There is a flat $50 refundable deposit charged to the card on file when you book — and that deposit is waived if you add the collision damage waiver (CDW) when you book. Our no-credit-card guide and debit-card guide walk through the payment side in detail.

Can I rent a car in Utah with an out-of-state license?

Yes. Driver Valley rents to drivers with a valid license from any US state — visitors, work travelers and new Utah residents alike. Bring the physical license; no credit card is required, and the refundable deposit is a flat $50.
